What Tallow Soap Actually Is

How to Make Tallow Soap, Step by Step

3. Mix the lye solution. Weigh the water into a stainless steel or heavy plastic jug, then add the lye to the water slowly, stirring as you go. It heats quickly and gives off fumes, so keep your face out of the steam. Set it aside to cool.
4. Melt the tallow. Warm it gently until it is fully liquid, then let the fat and the lye solution come down to a similar warm temperature before they meet.

What a Homemade Bar Will Not Do
A kitchen batch is not a tested, preserved commercial formulation. There is no batch testing behind it, no consistency between one pot and the next, and no shelf-life data. Keep the first batch for your own hands rather than giving it away.
It will also not be pH balanced, and neither is any other true soap. Skin sits at about pH 4.7 while true soap runs 9 to 10, which is a consequence of saponification rather than a flaw in your technique.
