A Cup O’Bone Broth A Day Keeps The Scalpel Away

Let’s Talk About Bone Broth, AKA “Liquid Gold”

A few months ago, I had some testing done, and came to find that I have a Leaky Gut! BUMMER! For those of you who don’t know what i’m talking about, read this article by Chris Kresser. “Leaky gut” is simply another term for increased intestinal permeability. This happens when the tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the lining of the small intestine, don’t work properly and let substances leak into the bloodstream.

Some possible causes of Leaky Gut are chronic inflammation, food sensitivity, damage from taking large amounts of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption, or compromised immunity.Basically, I’ve spent the last 30 years of my life destroying my body, and now i’m paying for it.

My nutritionist over at Ginger Newtrition put me on a strict regimen of probiotics & gut-healing foods, and told me to start drinking Bone Broth daily. After drinking this stuff consistently for about a month, I started to realize that my hair was growing faster and my nails were stronger than they’ve ever been! So I started to do some research, and found that the benefits of this stuff are amazing!

  • High collagen content supports hair, skin, and nail growth.
  • High in calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which makes it great for bone and tooth health.Good for joints and can aid in general recovery
  • Helps to soothe and heal the digestive tract
  • Boosts the immune system
  • I’ve even read that it can help reduce cellulite…Yes Please!!!

As we get older, our skin loses some of its elasticity and firmness. This “sag” is partially due to the loss and breakdown of collagen in the dermal layer of our skin. Collagen acts as the structural support in our skin. It exists naturally, but as we lose collagen through the aging process, our skin gets thinner & weaker, and we begin to get wrinkles.

Chicken bone broth is pretty easy to make, and it’s Cheap, too (and I Like Cheap)!. This is the recipe that I use on the regular. I usually just use the bones from 2 rotisserie chickens, along with some chicken feet that I buy at my local farmer’s market. I throw it all in the crock pot in the morning, and it’s done by the time I get home from work!

If you’re too lazy to make your own, you can also buy it from Lance the Flavor Chef. For those of you that live in Southern CA, it can be found at your local Jimbo’s. Or, you can order it through their website and have it delivered anywhere in the continental United States!

Another good source of collagen is Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate (AKA the “Green Jar” in our house). It dissolves quickly in hot or cold liquids so you can put it in ANYTHING!

Remember, EVERYTHING is connected to your Gut.

Healthy Gut = Healthy Digestion = Clear Skin

Have a GREAT weekend!

Until Next Time!
